"I returned to Scouting when my oldest son was in first grade. He was adamant that he wanted to join Cub Scouts, even when I pushed back some. Since then my whole family has gotten involved and we've shared one terrific experience after another with each other. Each of these opportunities have brought us closer together. We've gotten more involved as we've been able to help others around us and see them grow and experience the same joys we've been afforded."
"I am most motivated by the youth—knowing that our program can change the course of their lives regardless of whether they stay in for a year or all the way to Eagle. We have an opportunity to impact that."
"My Dad gave me the gift of Scouting and I’m proud to share it with my family –it’s a family affair all three of my kids and my wife are actively involved. I love to work with leaders empowering them to deliver the Promise of Scouting to their youth. Which is giving real responsibility to youth to run their program, develop their leadership skills, and learn to take care of themselves and others – in all circumstances. Scouting gives our youth the ability to lead their generation and I’m happy to play a small part in this program."
"My why is all of you, all of the youth, and all of the smiles that come from accomplishments, friendships, pride and good will generated by the scouting program. I have my three Eagles - my sons are all Eagles. It's my time to give back/pay forward. To see the excitement and smiles when scouts, young and old, gather for a meeting, to see a youth beam from ear to ear when they accomplish something for the first time, to hear the pride of a parent talking about their youth - - those are the things that warm my heart. "
"My boys and their futures. Scouts gives young people opportunities to learn and become leaders with character, while gaining a better appreciation for the natural world and their places in it. Being in a position to help them on that journey is a privilege. Being in a position to watch their transformations is a gift."
"As I continue my Scouting career I am blessed to see how impactful this program is for the youth. I see how the program has turned my boys into servant leaders who help others and live up to the Scouting values. This can be seen as Nathan continues to work on his Eagle project, and through Andrew as he is giving back by staffing NYLT. These values are what strengthens our Troop and helps the Scouters to grow."
"The continued adventures and the friendships that are built with my son and the Scouting community."
"Scouting is an amazing program, I love working with the kids and watching them grow, but the number one is the example I as setting for my own son, to give back to the program."
"I came back to scouting because I believe in the vision and mission of the BSA. I think it is the best program out there. Since then, my daughter has joined Scouts BSA. Watching her and her friends "get" the patrol method and be mutually supportive takes it beyond just theory, and I can see our youth grow in this program. I'm encouraged for the next generation."
"Scouting is our family ministry for God. We do this for our children, family, and all Scouts and Adult Leaders.
This IS for our Scouts!
Our Scouts ARE our future!
Our Scouts ARE worth our investment!!"
"I love the scouting family. Love the ability for my children and other youth to have outdoor adventures and new experiences while making friends and learning valuable life skills such as respect, responsibility, love for God and community."
"My why is getting to see the smiles and growth in skill and confidence in the Scouts I have the privilege to work with."
"My Why is to continue to honor the traditions of Scouting, to help mentor and train the next generation of volunteers that impact the lives of the scouts in our programs. Scouting provided me lots of memorable moments and today’s youth need that just as much as I did those years ago! And I get to go do these great adventures, large and small with my son, Logan."
"Just before our youngest son was old enough to join Cub Scouts, we were losing a lot of leaders. I chose to become an Assistant Cubmaster to help lead our Pack. I wanted to help give our sons a lot of fun experiences and great memories in the Pack. Before long the Pack became part of my family and I moved to the Cubmaster role. I love seeing the excitement in the Cub Scouts’ faces when they learn a new skill or complete a project (or even when they laugh at the looks on my face when I have to hold the fish that they caught)."
"Helping to continue the tradition of creating a place where my own children, and all the youth of today, can see themselves as successful participants and caretakers in the world of today AND tomorrow!"
"The sense of self confidence and awareness and acceptance my scouts have developed because of scouting is why I keep coming back."
"I grew up in scouting. My older brother and I both are Eagle Scouts. Both my sisters earned the Gold award in Girl scouts. When my son showed interest in scouting in Kindergarten...it got me excited to help him along the way. It wasn't until I raised my hand at a pack meeting when asked if any parents had any previous scouting experience, did I understand what I was getting into. Online training got me started but Woodbadge is really where I learned the the most for how to give the youth the most out of the scouting program."
"My Why:
I want to be there for my son and be involved in his life. To work to ensure that he is set on the right path in life."
"The reason I am in the scouting movement is to assist the young women of my troop develop skills and traits the week serve them in their adult life. Also, it is a great way to spend time with my daughter within new environments and opportunities."
"I believe in Scouting's ability to help young people become excellent old people. The results are evident. All kids are better off in Scouting, and we all need to step up to deliver the promise of Scouting. Walk the talk!"
"What makes me smile is helping people - supporting them and giving them the tools to succeed and be the best they can be. My husband is an Eagle Scout and his belief in and support of the program is inspiring to me and encourages me to want others to see the good Scouts can do. My son wants to earn his Eagle Award and I want to help make sure he continues to have trained leaders leading him along his path. It's a family affair...we've had great experiences as a family, and I want others to have the same."
"My WHY are my kids. They make me want to be a better example to them. If my expectation is for them to be good responsible people, then I should be a shining example of that."
"My why- it isn’t simple. I started in scouting when I was a kid, went all the way through the program and loved it. I am still friends with girls from my brownie troop! We returned to scouting when my oldest was ready to be a tiger- making sure he and my husband showed up in uniform 😉. Also pushing my husband very quickly into a leadership position. He should have been prepared, (ha ha!) he was a Boy Scout in his youth as well. When our oldest was born I said to him- are you ready? He said, “I think we have to be he is here!” I replied, “No. To be a Boy Scout leader.” His comment went something like, someone else will do it- I laughed for a long time.
While the first year was confusing, our pack was awesome. Everything we wanted. By his second year I was picked to be the new committee chair- we are serious about succession in our pack. As I sat at round tables, I grew increasingly frustrated by the lack of support any of the leadership around me was given by council. Coming from the era I did with GSUSA, I was use to the council professionals providing some program- not all but a good example of how program should be run. I was seeing some poor program around me, people were really trying but missing. After I learned that council was never going to provide that level of program I was looking for, it isn’t the way this organization ran, I jumped in with two feet.
Yes my why is primarily for those who I tuck in at night. However, for them to get the experience I was afforded when a youth, I need to be more than just my pack committee chair. I need to make sure there are programs, activities, advancement opportunities, leadership opportunities, large events, small events to further their scouting path. These events need to be practical for us and those around us to attend, in location and price.
This is my why- for the greater good of scouting, in my community and beyond. To strive for the sort of experience that motivates not only my kids, but those around them. While I may not be able to see the moment they complete/ accomplish/ master a skill at the program, I do get to see the joy, excitement, and drive it creates in them and those around them. That’s enough to keep me going, motivated, and driven to continue, to keep showing up, and keep trying my best to keep this going."
"Being able to share my Scouting experience with my kids. Especially since they started including girls. Now all of my children can experience the amazing adventure I went through."
"It's my time to give back to a movement which gave me so much many years ago, and made me believe that through trial and error, anything is possible if you put your mind to it (but having the support to back you up).
What motivates me to keep on doing this? Watching the youth grow in confidence, skills, self-worth, and helping them open their eyes to the greater world around them. That's what motivates me."
